We are excited to announce the upcoming collection, Poumai Naga Language Resources!

About the language

The Poumai Naga (Poula) language (ISO 639-3 pmx) is grouped under the Angami-Pochuri subfamily of the Trans-Himalayan language family. There are over eighty Poumai Naga villages that speak Poula in Senapati district Manipur which are roughly grouped into three administrative circles: Paomata, Lepaona, and Chilivai. The population of Poula speakers is 127,381 in Manipur, according to the 2011 Indian census. In addition, over 8000 speakers of Poula dwell in the Phek district of Nagaland.               

About the collection 

This collection will consist of audio, video, pictures, text recordings of Poumai Naga oral tradition of different genres, giving importance to endangered practices and folklore. A Poula dialects dictionary by Poumai Literature Society in collaboration with Dr. Sahiinii L. Veikho is in progress for publication in CoRSAL Occaisional Publications. In addition, a bilingual (Poula-English) story book of Poumai Naga tradition by John Basho is in preparation for publication.
